About Sandra Walters

Sandra Walters, RN, CN-BN, CBCN, is a nationally recognized expert in patient navigation. Since 1999, Sandra has led the development of three hospital based breast health/cancer programs while also filling the role of the Breast Health Educator/Navigator. The most recent, Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver, hired Sandra as a program development consultant for 18 months prior to her stepping into the RN Educator role that she currently holds.

In her work with breast oncology programs, Sandra has advised in defining the role of nurse navigators, developing and implementing various navigation system components to include weekly interdisciplinary patient conferences, optimal patient tracking systems, patient education materials, targeted connection to psychosocial and financial navigation support, and high risk screening programs. In addition, Sandra is currently on the planning team for NABPC accreditation at Exempla Saint Joseph’s in Denver.

Throughout her career, Sandra has evolved herself as an accomplished program development and systems solutions expert. She is highly regarded and nationally recognized for her passion and innovation regarding breast cancer care and received the prestigious Yoplait Champion Award in 2007. The following year, in a field of over 2,000 nurses, she was recognized by Nursing Spectrum Magazine (now Nurse.com) and was one of six to receive national recognition. Additionally, Sandra has been active in the clinical review of national breast cancer patient education materials, the development of the National Consortium of Breast Centers breast patient navigator certification exam, CBPN-IC, and in identifying nursing core competencies in the areas of breast health and cancer care. Sandra’s expertise in defining patient navigation and successful program development has been demonstrated throughout her career as is evidenced by her recognition for extraordinary accomplishments in her pursuit of excellence in providing and promoting patient centered care.
